Amy, Truro

It was great to photograph Cornish model Amy in Truro last night. Amy came along with friend Sarah to shoot a reconstruction of Rueben’s “Lot’s Daughters” and we took a few extra photographs afterwards. The photograph of “Lot’s Daughters” will be going into the exhibition folder on the main website soon under the portfolio page.

Peninsular Medical School Ball – Eden Project

I had the privilege of taking the Photo Booth Experience to the Eden Project, Cornwall last week to photograph the Peninsular Medical School Ball. What a night it was! Five hundred guests for a sit down dinner in the Link Building, freedom to roam the biomes, fireworks!

It’s a little late due to server problems but here’s just a few of the many photographs taken taken on the night.

Damian and Carina’s Wedding Blessing – Treverbyn, Cornwall

Damian and Carina had a service of blessing at the church of St Peter the Apostle, Treverbyn, Cornwall on a particularly cold spring afternoon. Low clouds promised rain but on the positive side they provided nice diffused light for the photos. Damian and Carina both looked fabulous as did the 5 bridesmaids/flower girls – I love having lots of bridesmaids to photograph.

It was great meeting both your families and a privilege to photograph your wedding blessing.

David and Helen’s St Ives Wedding

After days of raining sweeping Cornwall the sun shone in St Ives for the wedding of David and Helen at Carbis Bay Hotel. David and Helen’s wedding was a lovely intimate celebration with just over 30 guests, which is great for me as the photographer as I can meet and chat to all of them. Carbis Bay Hotel is a great wedding venue standing on the cliffs overlooking the whole bay with views up the Cornish coast to the Godrevey lighthouse. It’s a beautiful hotel inside too with some great photo opportunities even if the weather outside does turn out wet.

Photos at your wedding reception

Everyone wants photographs of their wedding reception yet few people think and plan how to get them.This simple guide will help you obtain the photos you desire. Your decisions revolve around the type of photographs you want and the budget available.

1) Ask your family and friends to forward you photos from their cameras and phones.

Advantage – cheap
Disadvantage – you don’t have control over quality or subject matter. It can also be problematic obtaining the photos.
Helpful hint – tell guests beforehand that you are hoping that they will share their photos.

2) Put disposable cameras on the tables.

Advantage – cheap
Disadvantage – you have no control over quality or subject matter and it is subject to abuse when guests have had a few drinks! Cameras sometimes get lost. Need to take the cameras to have the film developed.
Helpful hints – make sure you buy cameras with inbuilt flash or there will be no usable photos.

3) Put a Polaroid camera next to the guest book.

Advantage – you will get some nice photos to put into the guestbook together with personal comments.
Disadvantage – the photos are not available as digital images. Photographs are quite small. Camera is expensive to purchase.
Helpful hint – ask someone to keep a watching brief on proceedings and get the first few entries in the book early on.

4) Hire a photo booth - or the Photo Booth Experience

Advantage – good quality photos with correct lighting. Good size photos. Guests take home their own souvenir photos and you get either a copy of each photo for the guestbook and/or digital copies
Disadvantage – more expensive and takes up a fair amount of room in the venue
Helpful hint – talk to an event photographer

5) Ask your wedding photographer to stay to the end and take photos of the reception

Advantage – good quality photos
Disadvantage – expensive. Photos will either be posed and wooden or candid shots which may be uninspiring
Helpful hint – ask your photographer if he/she has done this before and ask to see the results

Mehndi Night

Indian weddings are certainly different from traditional English weddings. When my son married his beautiful wife last weekend I didn’t so much lose a son as gain a whole new Indian family. The Mehndi Night took place two days before the wedding. There are numerous traditions – applying Henna tattoos, the dholki singers who play a small drum and sing songs about how wonderful the bride is and how stupid the groom is, the ritual washing and presenting of jewellery – all in all a great and colourful party.

Although not the photographer for either the Mehndi or wedding I just couldn’t resist taking a few photos of the proceedings, just in case when I get old I can’t remember how much fun it was.

Marazion Wedding, Cornwall

It was a joy to photograph the wedding of Richard and Allison at the weekend at the Godolphin Arms, Marazion. The weather was amazingly warm and sunny - if only the wind had dropped a little to be kinder to everyones hairstyles. The tide was low so we could do all the photos on the beach – some on the causeway to St Michael’s Mount, others in the lee of Chapel Rock. Richard and Allison’s was a small intimate wedding with just 14 guests which meant we could chat to all the guests in the course of taking the photos. I trust you are enjoying/have enjoyed your honeymoon in West Cornwall and wish you every success for the future.

I’ve decided that I like photographing actors to get a portrait for their casting agents website. There is a very particular brief to work to and an intensity to the session. The photos have to be closely cropped head shots against a white (or near white) or black background in both mono and colour. The photograph, together with a bio, is the only thing a casting director is going to see when deciding who to call for an audition, so there is a lot riding on that photo. The photo has to portray the individual to their very best advantage allowing the fullness of their character to shine through. Each of these shoots has involved, not just the taking of the photos, but several hours sat in front of the computer selecting ‘the shot’ – and often re-shooting them. It’s an interesting and rewarding process. Here are the photos that Richard chose.

Comic Relief

Titan the Robot visited Richard Lander School, Truro as part of year 8′s science syllabus and also Sport Relief 2012. The school took the opportunity to advertise and recruit for their involvement with a Sport Relief Mile event later. Titan will also be present at the Plymouth Mile on March 25th.

The old show biz adage is “never work with animals or children” – nobody mentions robots! The young people were already excited. When Titan made his spectacular (he stands over 7ft tall) and noisy entrance the noise and excitement levels rose to new heights! Notwithstanding the excitement of the event the pupils were well behaved and happy to pose for some publicity photos. The photos have been sent to various media outlets by Comic Relief so keep your eyes open and you might just see one of my photos in the media.
